OVERVIEW
THE KING’S HOSPITAL MASTERPLAN
MOLA Architecture was engaged by The King’s Hospital, a Church of Ireland co-educational independent day and boarding school, to create a vision for the future evolution of the school and its lands at Palmerstown, Dublin.
MOLA prepared a Masterplan for the school, anticipating integration of STEM facilities, while rationalising and improving internal circulation and wayfinding, and existing learning and boarding facilities.
The masterplan shows a clear and simple separation of uses: learning spaces are re-organised around departments. The communal space becomes the structuring element of the plan. The “Gallery” develops into the main circulation spine, consolidating existing and future department expansion, encouraging informal social interaction. It links the reception hall to a new “Town Hall” multifunctional space, designed for the students to gather and socialise. The circulation space is opened to the outdoors, and framing views to the demesne landscape and courtyards, blurring the line between internal and external spaces.
The initial phase of works consisting of the refurbishment of the Boarding Accommodation was completed in spring 2019. MOLA are also engaged in ongoing proposals for enhanced sports facilities and the primary amenity areas.
