OVERVIEW

Sport Ireland Long Barn Development

MOLA Architecture as part of our involvement in the Sport Ireland architectural framework were commissioned to develop a strategic masterplan for the courtyard buildings connected with Abbottstown House. This strategic Masterplan established that a nodal shift in the use of the Courtyard from use as a storage area for National Governing Bodies (NGB) and Sport Ireland grounds keeping staff to office, workshop and other sports related activities could bring about a transformation in the perception of the inner part of the Campus and the assemblage of historic buildings which surround Abbotstown House.

The resulting Long Barn office development is a 718sqm part single and part two storey building. The development provides a permanent base for the Olympic Federation of Ireland on campus and a dedicated Athletes lounge for the Sport Ireland Institute, creating an athlete-centred area to support Team Irelands preparation for Paris 2024. The works required the adaptive re-use, refurbishment and extension of historic barns. The characteristic roof profiles of these structures being maintained and augmented by a contemporary 2-storey extension added with striking asymmetric roof profile. The new addition being contemporary in character and detail but composed of a restrained palette of complementary materials.
