OVERVIEW

Ardcairn House Student Residences

This mixed-use Student Accommodation development is situated at the junction of Brunswick Street and Grangegorman Lower, Dublin 7. The development varies between 4, 5 and 6 storey blocks and provides 571 bed spaces, a large outdoor courtyard, gym and various ancillary spaces for student use. A large retail unit to Brunswick Street and 3no. smaller retail units to Grangegorman Lower are also provided within the development. The main entrance and reception area is located on Grangegorman Lower. The design intent for the main Grangegorman elevation is to provide movement along the facade as the building climbs up the change in level from south to north. The main façade material is brickwork with a stonework base plinth, which is set back from the brick face. The stonework plinth is cranked to focus access to the undercroft entrance area. The aluminium windows include feature grilles at the opening sections which allows maximum ventilation yet limits any requirements for restrictors. The courtyard, which is located at first floor podium level provides a high quality outdoor amenity area and also provides entries to six of the blocks. The seventh block is accessed from the ground floor adjacent to the main entrance. The primary challenge of this design was to be space efficient while providing high quality living areas for students. This was provided by designing generous communal living / kitchen areas and keeping area dedicated to circulation to a minimum.
